Congratulation to our very own Josh Alters who won the “Master Fly” tying competition at this year’s Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo this past weekend. The competition was sponsored by Regal Vise, Montana Fly Co., and The Fly Angler.
The competition was something of an “Iron Chef” of fly tying competition. Competitors were given a variety of materials to use and come up with the best fly that they could. This year’s category was “streamers.”
The competition was divvied into a qualifying heat from which the winners qualified for the championship bracket.
Materials for the first round included more of the typical fly tying fare (chenille, marabou, saddle feathers, and flashabou). However the secret ingredient was a bike tire inner tube. Here was Josh’s first concoction:
The championship round took more of a “junk you can find in the garbage” approach, challenging the participants to be very creative with their creations. The materials list included:
- inner tube from a bike tire
- old Halloween wig
- sliver twist tie
- black garbage bag
- dental floss
- foam packaging material
And here’s the fly that won it all. Way to go, Josh!
The spoils of victory
For his creativity and tying grace under pressure, Josh took home some pretty swell swag, but best of all, he gets his own custom-made Regal vise. Nice!
