A pretty brief report today… I was able to make it out on the Milwaukee River near Grafton, WI for two hours of fishing to wrap up the weekend. I think the water was at fairly normal levels for this time of year, but things were so dramatically low last year that my point of view is probably skewed a bit.
Action was slow, as I only managed one smallmouth bass. He viciously hit an Alters Rusty Crayfish – I felt like he was practically going to yank the rod out of my hand. This fish was tough and it took me about a minute of fighting to even get a glance at him. I was using my 6wt rod, so I wasn’t using the heavy artillery, but was adequately equipped for the typical smallies I get in the Milwaukee.
Given the fight he put up, I fully anticipated that I was going to haul in a 16″ smallmouth. Much to my surprise, he was about 13 1/2″. Not a big guy, but certainly a ton of fun!
Other than a few carp I spooked out, or saw sipping caddisflies off the surface, there wasn’t a ton of action. It’s been tough to get out as much as I’d like, though, so just getting to the river was nice.
